Welcome to Chełm Print _CMN_EMAIL_ALT

Chełm, a district city with a population of nearly 70 thousand, situated in the east of Lublin region, was in the past one of the main centres in the middle reaches of the Bug river. As a borderland city of Eastern and Western Slav lands, it was influenced by Catholicism and the Orthodox church and was competed for by Poland, Russia, Lithuania and Hungary. For centuries Chełm was inhabited by ethnically and religiously diverse population - Poles, Ukrainians, Jews and other nationalities. The fates of this colourful community, facing wars, uprisings and many other dramatic experiences, have left their imprint on the character of the city, which can be seen in numerous material traces and in a unique cultural climate of Chełm.

The present-day Chełm Land is a region particularly graceful for tourism. Numerous routes and footpaths make it possible to become familiar with the historical and natural assets of Chełm and its environs. The ever developing hotel facilities and a considerable number of restaurants and bars offering traditional regional dishes make it easy to organise various tourist events. Leisure enthusiasts can make use of the so called agro-tourist farms usually located in quiet and charming corners of the region. Those interested in qualified tourism can set out on hiking tours, bicycle rides or go kayaking. One's stay in the Chełm Land is even more attractive due to many sporting and cultural events. The vicinity of the Ukrainian border also makes Chełm a perfect base for trips to the outlying areas of the former Commonwealth of Poland.
